Description:Reproductive toxicity of glycol ethers is reviewed. Evidence for testicular toxicity of ethylene-glycol-monomethyl-ether (109864) (EGME), ethylene-glycol-monomethyl-ether-acetate (110496), ethylene- glycol-monoethyl-ether (110805) (EGEE), ethylene-glycol-monoethyl- ether-acetate (111159), diethylene-glycol-monoethyl-ether (111900), and diethylene-glycol-dimethyl-ether (111966) is discussed. Hematological, testicular, and lymphoid effects in rats and mice exposed to EGME are discussed. The results of 2 year feeding studies with rats fed ethylene-glycol and diethylene-glycol are reviewed. The lack of adverse effects in pregnant rats treated with EGEE either orally or subcutaneously is cited. Similar results with mice and rabbits are presented. Dose dependent intrauterine fetal death in pregnant mice treated with EGME is discussed. Skeletal defects are also mentioned. Dose related incidences of intrauterine death resulting from oral doses of ethylene-glycol-dimethyl-ether are discussed. Inhalation studies on EGEE with rabbits and rats are reviewed. Behavioral teratology studies with rats exposed to EGEE are discussed. The effects of dermal application of EGEE to pregnant rats are reviewed. A discussion of prolonged gestation in animals exposed to some glycol ethers is presented. A list of published reports on reproductive effects of glycol ethers is included.
