Description:The development of a relatively low cost cascade impactor for personal and area sampling was discussed. Construction, calibration, and laboratory and field testing were presented. Plastic 37 millimeter filter cassette tops were chosen as the basic structure of the impactor. To allow the cassette tops to be stacked, the inside diameter of each was machined out and the inlet nozzle was machined down to fit. A 4-stage impactor was built, based on 4 jets per stage, with estimated hole sizes of 0.48, 0.40, aluminum foil was used as the collection medium. Laboratory evaluations of the impactor system were carried out in coal dust and silica dust chambers, and the results were compared to those with standard samplers. Field evaluations were also carried out in a woodshop and a peanut processing facility; again, the results were compared to those of standard samplers. Both laboratory and field tests showed that the sampler is accurate and precise. The authors note that this impactor offers some advantage over other designs for field use. This low cost sampler should provide a complete characterization of aerosol exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
