Description:Several control technology surveys were conducted to assess the efficiency of techniques used to reduce exposures to lead (7439921) (Pb) in lead reprocessing operations (SIC-3341). An evaluation of the central vacuum system at the Tonolli North America facility in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania and the General Battery Corporation (GBC) installations in Reading and Hamburg, Pennsylvania, was evaluated. Evaluations were made of the air showers and automatic shoe cleaners at both facilities and the stand by pulpits at the Tonolli smelter. Studies were made of the effectiveness of emission controls on the nozzles of the blast furnaces at a Pb smelter in Lyon Station, Pennsylvania. An evaluation was made of pavement cleaning equipment and methods as a means of reducing Pb exposure at two other facilities. All the techniques and methods were found to be effective in reducing Pb exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
