Description:The concentrations of three immunoglobulin fractions in the serum of patients with berylliosis were determined. Five groups of patients were involved in the study. Group one consisted of six patients with chronic berylliosis. Group two was made up of seven subjects who had acute berylliosis. Group three consisted of five patients who had dermatitis, but were currently free of the condition. Group four was comprised of 22 subjects who had worked in a beryllium (7440417) factory for 15 years or longer but never had any signs of berylliosis. Group five consisted of three patients who had symptoms of acute or chronic nonoccupational pulmonary disease. The immunoglobulin fractions (IgG, IgM, and IgA) were determined using commercially available immunoplates test kits. In group one, four patients had IgG concentrations greater than the normal amount of 1263 milligrams per 100 milliliters (mg/100ml). Two of the subjects had increased IgM and IgA concentrations. In group two, four patients also had increases of serum IgG. Three subjects had increased IgA concentrations greater than the normal amount of 240mg/100ml. In group three, four of the patients had increased IgG concentrations. Only one subject from this group had an IgA concentration greater than the normal amount. In group four, more than 80 percent had increased IgG concentrations. Ten of the subjects had increased IgA and only one had an increase of IgM greater than the normal amount of 114mg/100ml. In group five, only one patient had an increase in IgM concentrations. Both IgM and IgA were well within the normal limits. The authors conclude that long exposure to beryllium increases serum IgG concentrations. They recommend additional studies to determine if this increase could be used as an indicator of beryllium hypersensitivity. [Description provided by NIOSH]
