Description:The effect of topical application of defined constituents of coal-tar (8007452) (CT) on skin and liver aryl-hydrocarbon-hydroxylase (AHH) and 7-ethoxycoumarin-O-deethylase (7EO-d) activities was investigated. Neonatal rats received a single topical application of 100 microliters CT dissolved in acetone or benzene at a dose of 1 millogram per 10 grams. Twenty four hours after the CT application, the animals were killed and a 9000 gram supernatant fraction of each tissue was prepared. The topical application resulted in AHH induction and 7EO-d activities in skin, lung, kidney, intestine, and liver. In descending order AHH induction was maximal in skin, liver, intestine, lung and kidney. 7EO-d inducibility was highest in the lung. The authors suggest that CT inhalation could affect tumor induction in the lung. [Description provided by NIOSH]
