Description:Possible health hazards among curing department workers in a tire manufacturing factory were assessed by multiphasic health testing, combined with industrial hygiene measurements of workplace exposure. Ventilatory function tests, chest X-ray, and standard blood and urine tests were performed on 62 white male workers who had worked in the curing department longer than in any other department and on a comparison group of 280 white males who had never worked in any department with exposure to higher than background concentrations of respirable particulates. The ratio of positive screens was computed and compared to the expected number computed indirectly and adjusted for age and smoking habits. Worker exposure to respirable particulates also was measured during each of three shifts in each of three curing areas. Employment in the curing department was associated with a higher than expected incidence of shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheeze, loss of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV-1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), decline of the ratio of FEV-1 to FVC, and tingling and numbness in the extremities. These associations were more pronounced as duration of employment in the curing department increased. The authors conclude that multiphasic health testing, combined with measurements of workplace exposure, is useful in identifying possible health hazards among curing department workers in tire manufacturing factories.
