Description:The occurrence of secretory immunoglobulin-A (IgA) in chronic pulmonary disease was studied in humans. Saliva and serum samples were collected from healthy normal individuals, from coal miners (SIC-1211) with simple or complicated pneumoconiosis, and from hospital patients with chronic lung diseases not associated with coal mining. The quantity of IgA in saliva was determined by electroimmunodiffusion, and the concentrations in whole serum samples were determined by a modification of the radial diffusion method. Some samples also were tested for influenza PR-8 hemagglutinin inhibition antibodies. High serum IgA concentrations correlated with high salivary concentrations in subjects with chronic pulmonary disease. Serum IgA concentrations were elevated in coal miners with simple and complicated pneumoconiosis, but salivary IgA concentrations were elevated only in miners with simple pneumoconiosis. Cigarette smoking suppressed secretory IgA production in older normal subjects but not in those with pneumoconiosis or other chronic respiratory disorders. About 40 percent of the saliva samples tested contained antiinfluenza PR-8 antibodies. The authors suggest that the salivary globulins in these subjects represent functional antibodies.
