Description:Lung function changes were evaluated in active and retired cotton textile workers (SIC-2211) from four mills in Columbia, South Carolina. A group of 330 workers employed in the mills for at least 3 years before 1955 underwent lung function tests in 1973 and again in 1979. Information on work status and smoking habits was collected. Pulmonary function records of employees who had died between the study years were also reviewed. The comparison population included nontextile workers. Regardless of work status, the textile workers had lower mean lung function values than the comparison group. In men, lung function decrement was related to early retirement and to mortality. Lung function losses in women who were active workers in both study years or who were retired at the time of the second survey were greater than those for men with corresponding work status. For subjects who were retired at both study years, women had less lung function impairment than men. Total and partial disability rates were greater among the textile worker than among the comparisons. The authors conclude that studies using only active cotton textile workers may result in serious underestimates of lung disease prevalence. [Description provided by NIOSH]
