Description:Liquid red spots on the skin of flight attendants (FAs) were investigated. Over a 2 month period 91 different Eastern Airlines FAs were affected by the spots. Most of the cases were reported after flights between New York City and Miami. The afflicted FAs demonstrated life vest techniques with vests that were stencilled in red ink. Flakes from the ink had the same chemical composition as the red spots found on the skin, including the pigments chrome- molybdate-orange and lithol-rubine (5281049) bounded by nitrocellulose (9004700) lacquer and a rosin modified phenolin- resin. There was no recurrence of the red spots after the FAs began using operational life vests without the stencilled lettering. The authors note that their investigation emphasizes the importance of observation in occupational hygiene. [Description provided by NIOSH]
