Description:Information on the acute and chronic effects of methyl-methacrylate vapor (80626) (MMA) exposure is reviewed. Experimental results are included for studies on median lethal dose, subchronic toxicity, body weight and gross metabolic performance, blood chemistry, and cardiovascular response. Also reviewed are findings on central nervous system effects, histopathology, teratology, and gastrointestinal motility. The authors conclude that no data presently exists to indicate that routine occupational exposures to MMA are hazardous. Available information does suggest that low concentrations of the vapor can affect gastrointestinal motility. MMA is a powerful irritant and can induce cellular response. The authors recommend that the adequacy of the threshold limit value for MMA be evaluated on the basis of the cellular responses. [Description provided by NIOSH]
