Description:Three sampling methods for airborne beryllium (7440417) were compared to determine their degree of measurement uniformity. Personal total samples, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) samples for airborne contaminants, and personal respirable samples for dust that reaches the lung were tested. All samples were analyzed by atomic absorption. Statistical analysis indicated that the three methods yeilded different results for samples taken in the same environment and that no reliable relationship existed to permit converison of the results obtained by one method to those obtained by the others. Within the same environment, personal total sampling gave higher results than AEC sampling, which in turn produced higher results than personal respirable sampling. The authors recommend specifying the exact sampling method to be used in measuring compliance to a standard. [Description provided by NIOSH]
