Cotton dust and industrial hygiene survey at the Stearns and Foster Company, Cincinnati, Ohio.

  Airborne dust concentrations were determined at the Stearns and Foster Company (SIC-2515) in Cincinnati, Ohio, from May 8 to 12, 1972. The sampling focused on the mattress division which used large amounts of raw cotton and employed 457 workers. The division process included garnetting, tape edging, box spring padding, sewing, and quilting. Shredding operations located in the textiles division also were monitored. A total of 148 samples were collected by 18 automatic elutriator samplers. Eleven samplers were placed in the garnett section and seven were divided between the other sections. The garnett and shredding sections had average dust concentrations of 3.4 and 2.3 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), respectively, compared to the current threshold limit value (TLV) of 1.0mg/CuM. Dust concentrations in all other sections were well below the TLV of 10mg/CuM for nuisance dust. The authors recommend that dust control measures be taken, including use of a vacuum system, negative pressure enclosures, local exhaust ventilation and protective respirators.
