Description:Experimental models of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in rabbits were constructed to investigate the etiology of the disease. Depressed arterial oxygen (7782447) tensions, hemolytic complement activities, and platelet counts, followed by the challenge of unimmunized rabbits by aerosols containing Aspergillus spores were used to determine the effect of the humoral antibody on the pulmonary physiologic impairment. It was shown to depend on the immunization by antihuman serum albumin (HSA) serum. Passive immunization by large quantities of the serum led to no rabbit response to depressions in arterial oxygen tension following aerosol challenge with antigen. Active immunization did produce responses with diverse patterns of pulmonary impairment with time, but no correlation of these defects with the presence of precipitins could be made.
