Description:The development of a solid sorbent sampling method for use at the OSHA standard of 0.1mg per cubic meter for white phosphorus (7723140) vapor is described. Previous methods of using a Smith- Greenberg impinger as a device for sampling the breathing zones of individuals at a worksite proved inconvenient because of spillage and evaporation. The new method involves the collection of trace amounts of gaseous phosphorus on a porous polymer. When used with a personal sampling pump, the solid sorbent tube is a convenient device for taking personal samples in a work atmosphere. Samples should be taken at 50 to 400ml per minute for a total sample volume of 10 to 50 liters. The tubes are stable within 10% at 25 degrees C for 1 week when exposed and capped, and if longer storage is required, refrigeration at 0 degrees C or storage in xylene extract is recommended. Elevated temperature could have a harmful effect on the collection and storage of the samples. Results of a study comparing this new method with the xylene bubbler method show that they agree well.
