  This letter criticizes some points made in a previous editorial by Darrel Douglas. Suitably trained technicians can be responsible for routine tasks, freeing the industrial hygienist for other tasks. The variability during the day and between days in the air quality of the workplace requires multiple measurements and direction from the industrial hygienist. "Professional judgement" is considered a myth, from which many errors have derived. Examples of incorrect decisions about benzene (71432) and vinyl-chloride (75014), and the continued use of qualitative tests of respirator fitting when only quantitative tests are fully applicable, show that current scientific procedures must be used to protect the health of workers.
