  Shipyard health problems are briefly reviewed in this introduction to a conference on the health of shipyard workers, and two studies of hazards to welders and pipe coverers conducted toward the end of World War II in shipyards are critically reviewed and follow-up data are given. Health concerns include specialized working conditions and hazardous materials. The published and unpublished preliminary results of the latest follow-up studies show that the parameters used for fiber size and to indicate asbestosis are inadequate and that the duration of exposure to asbestos (1332214) is of prime importance.
