Uptake of mercury and mercury-amino acid complexes by rat renal cortex slices.

Description:The effects of metabolism and complexes with amino acids on the renal uptake of mercury are determined using rat renal cortex slices. Mercury (7439976) levels in the slices after 1 hour of incubation are 50 percent higher with mercuric cysteine than with mercuric-chloride (7487947). The enhanced uptake of mercuric cysteine is reduced in the presence of an excess of lysine (56871) or histidine (71001), with dinitrophenol (51285) present, at 25 degrees or in anaerobic conditions. The uptake of mercuric cysteine is unaffected by serine and increased by cysteine (52904). The metabolic conditions do not affect the uptake of mercuric chloride, suggesting that a portion of the renal uptake of mercury operates through amino acid transport mechanisms acting on mercury-amino acid complexes.
