Description:Reactions are offered urging rethinking on the adequacy of a widely used criterion for defining hearing handicap in view of data given in a paper on impairment to hearing from noise exposure. The evaluations basic to the estimation of the risk from loss of hearing from known levels of noise exposure are criticized and safe limits are recommended. The use of proposed complex schemes for rating noise hazards to hearing as derived from presumed relationships between temporary and permant noise induced threshold shifts in hearing is questioned.
