Description:A mathematical model of the head is constructed to examine the shear strains developed in the brain, considering the brain as a spherical viscoelastic medium attached to the inside of a rigid spherical shell. The mechanical wave motion generated in the brain when the head is subjected to an angular acceleration of a particular amplitude and duration is calculated and compared with experimental data for monkeys, showing that the threshold of angular acceleration necessary to cause concussion varies with the duration of the acceleration as predicted by the model. Data are given for shear strain and angular acceleration necessary for causing concussion. [Description provided by NIOSH]
