Description:Review of pulmonary function tests on the basis of necessary capabilities and usefulness, importance of adequate personnel and apparatus in making measurements, extension of tests to increase sensitivity when a specific anatomic and physiologic derangement is expected, and some problems in the analysis and interpretation of data derived from the lung function. Topics include: requirements of the test, information obtained by spirometry, newer techniques of detecting airways obstruction, alveolar gas transfer, and special applications of pulmonary function testing. Theoretical considerations are given for maximum and partial expiratory flow volume curves, closing volume, closing capacity, vital capacity, and total lung capacity. [Description provided by NIOSH]
