Description:Noise radiation from different transportation facilities, including airports, roadways, and rail lines, is described with procedures for rating annoyance factor or complaint potential in impacted inhabited areas. Noise abatement measures described and recommended include: site selection for transportation facilities emphasizing compatible land use in bordering areas; erection of barriers, and use of land cuts, embankments, and depressions; design modifications for vibration isolation, and for elimination of irregularities in vehicle contact surfaces; and acoustical treatment of facilities, including use of sound absorbent materials. Causes for and reduction of aircraft noise are reviewed, with the expected problem of sonic booms. [Description provided by NIOSH]
