  Presentation of a summary of the National Conference on Cotton Dust and Health held May 2, 1970 and the Recommendations of the organizing committee. The conference was planned as an educational activity to enlist the talents of the agricultural, manufacturing, engineering, and medical communities of the society to control and prevent byssinosis. Five sessions are reported: medical aspects of byssinosis, cotton dust sampling, dust and lint suppression, management's responsibility to people, and foreign and U.S. investigations. Recommendations are made on byssinosis with regard to dust sampling and control, medical surveillance and management and priorities for investigation. The priorities for investigation include: establishment of a threshold limit value for respirable cotton dust, design of exhaust ventilation and filtration systems; determining the prevalence of byssinosis and disability and mortality rates; study of pathogenesis of byssinosis; and finding economic and effective techniques for removing respirable dust from cotton prior to manufacturing.
