Description:This study was designed to investigate the mechanical properties of the lungs in working coal miners in order to determine what abnormalities result from simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The study tried to determine whether the elastic properties of the lung might be altered by either the small amount of fibrosis or the focal emphysema that are found in this condition. An attempt was made to determine whether resistance in the small airways was increased in the absence of significant large airway obstruction. Twenty five working bituminous coal miners were studied. They were selected from three mines, which were among the 31 selected as part of an epidemiological study conducted to determine the prevalence and progression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis in the United States.
