Description:This report summarized data for confirmed silicosis cases ascertained during 1993 from the SENSOR silicosis surveillance and intervention programs in seven states. There were 265 confirmed silicosis cases initially ascertained in 1993. The year of birth for the patients ranged from 1898 to 1968 with the median being 1924. Silica (14808607) exposure in manufacturing industries accounted for 78% of the 256 cases. The primary metal industries were associated with silica exposure in 86% of the cases in Wisconsin, 74% of the cases in Michigan, 46% of the cases in Ohio, and 30% of the cases in Illinois. Industries manufacturing stone, clay, glass and concrete products accounted for 29% of the cases in New Jersey. In Texas 21% of the cases were linked with the industrial and commercial machinery and computer equipment manufacturing industries. Less than 10 years employment in industries with potential silica exposure was reported by 14% of cases, with 35% having 11 to 30 years of potential exposure, and 26% having greater than 30 years. Overall, 192 primary workplaces were associated with potentially hazardous silica exposure for these 256 cases. Workplace inspections were performed at 14 (7%) of these locations; silica levels at nine exceeded 0.5mg/m3. [Description provided by NIOSH]
