Description:Sleep health is a key factor to promote a high-functioning and healthy workforce. The design of the work schedules, the culture in the workplace, and the policies, procedures, and practices all have a critical influence on sleep health and the ability of workers to be alert on the job. Overly demanding work schedules and job stress will make it difficult for workers to get enough sleep. This chapter gives an overview of strategies that management and safety personnel can integrate into workplace systems to reduce risks from inadequate sleep. It discusses three types of controls to promote sleep health and an alert workforce. They are: eliminate or reduce the hazard; institute policies programs, and practices; and educate managers and workers. Throughout the chapter, the term manager refers to business leaders and safety professionals who are responsible for establishing and maintaining workplace systems, and providing advice and consultation.
