Description:Mr. Brad Husberg, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, NIOSH Alaska Field Station, presented "Non-Fatal Injuries in the Alaskan Commercial Fishing Industry." Mr. Husberg began his presentation by describing the Alaska Trauma Registry (ATR), a state-wide, population-based data source for traumatic injuries whose data are used to identify work-related injuries for analytic purposes. For example, ATR data show that the most non-fatal commercial fishing injuries requiring hospitalization are to the upper extremities (hands and arms) and the most frequent type of injuries are fractured bones. This information, along with other data gleaned from the ATR, can be used to formulate prevention strategies.
