Description:The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was created to conduct research and training and make recommendations for the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries. To meet the national and regional needs for trained safety and health professionals, NIOSH developed the Educational Resource Centers (ERCs) in 1977. NIOSH currently funds 15 ERCs at universities which provide multidisciplinary graduate and continuing education programs in occupational medicine, occupational health nursing, industrial hygiene and safety. These Centers serve as regional resources for all those involved with occupational health and safety, including industry, labor, government, academic and the general public. ERCs are funded for five-year periods by NIOSH under a competitive peer-review process. A program announcement is published in the Federal Register every year, and proposals by applicants are evaluted extensively by NIOSH staff and independent scientific reviewers.
