Walk-through survey report: control technology for fermentation processes at Novo Biochemical Industries, Inc., Franklinton, North Carolina.

  A walk through survey was conducted at the Novo Biochemical Industries, Inc. (SIC-2869), Franklinton, North Carolina as part of a study of control technology in use in the fermentation industry. The company was a manufacturer of industrial enzymes. The processes surveyed involved the production of alpha-amylase and amylglucosidase with microbial strains of Bacillus-licheniformis and Aspergillus-niger, respectively. The production was a predominately closed system once the process has graduated from the laboratory to the large scale fermentation process steps. There was extremely limited potential for exposure to the microorganisms involved in the fermentation process or the enzyme products of these microorganisms. All employees maintained a clean occupational environment. A computerized preventative maintenance program was performed as part of the good work practice regime. A corporate industrial hygienist was available on a consulting basis. Relatively complete medical/biological examinations and monitoring programs were in place. The safety program and operations were guided by a Safety Committee composed of a chairman and two members. Personal protection requirements were part of the safety procedures at the site.
