Description:A study was made to document and evaluate effective technologies for the control of potential health hazards at the Dixie Furniture Facility (SIC-2435, 2436) located in Lexington, North Carolina. Specifically, this site was chosen for study since extensive measures to control formaldehyde (50000) emissions from hot press veneering operations have been developed by the management. The facility contained a radio frequency heated press as well as two heated platen presses. The hot press veneering processes were described. The potential hazards from formaldehyde exposure associated with the processes were mentioned in context to OSHA and NIOSH regulations. The measurement of control parameters included determination of volumetric flow rates from ventilation ducts as well as collection and analysis of personal and worksite samples. All sampling findings were below the OSHA standard except for a few short term samples. None of the personal or area time weighted average concentrations exceeded 2 parts per million (ppm) over the 3 day sampling period. Only one was greater than 1ppm. Peak exposures were not as well controlled. The automated loading mechanism on the large multiple opening press may have lessened the exposure of the loaders by allowing them to stand about 10 feet away from the press while performing their jobs. The supply air ventilation was exemplary, despite the fact that two supply air outlets in this facility were not properly placed. The study findings indicated that the outlets should be positioned directly above the workers.
