Industrial hygiene survey of Flintkote Cement Co., San Andreas, California. Cement workers morbidity study.

  A walk through survey was conducted at the Flintkote Cement Company, San Andreas, California to investigate the presence of materials harmful to the health of workers at that and similar sites. For most jobs at the site the respirable and total dust levels were below recommended limits. There were six respirable dust samples and four total dust samples which exceeded the recommended ACGIH levels for respirable nuisance particulate. Detectable levels of quartz (14808607) were found in 11 respirable dust samples. The authors recommend that monitoring be used to evaluate quartz exposure and to determine those jobs with highest exposure levels. Jobs of greatest concern include the kiln feed operators and coal handlers. Engineering controls should be used to reduce the worker exposure to airborne dust. Kiln feed operators were overexposed to quartz while loading haulage trucks with waste precipitator dust. The use of disposable paper or cloth respirators is not suitable for protecting the worker from dust levels. Full face piece respirators may be used instead of half or quarter mask respirators to alleviate eye irritation.
