In-depth survey report: control technology for manual dye weigh-out operations at Uni-Trade Company, Inc., Newark, New Jersey.

  A study was made to document and evaluate the typical dye weigh-out operation and provide baseline data for the associated worker exposures to airborne contaminants at the Uni-Trade Company (SIC- 2261), Newark, New Jersey. The air in the dye room was stagnant with no more than a 20 to 30 feet per minute measured air flow towards the entrance. During the weigh out operation, the personal and area total dust concentrations were all below the permissible levels. Several variables which can affect the concentrations measured were noted including the dustiness of the dye weighed, the actual amount of material weighed, the height of the drum, the height of the material inside the drum, the body measurements of the individual worker, and the work practices of the worker. This company was experiencing difficulties with color fly, airborne dye dust on finished goods. The establishment of a better engineering control system would eliminate the color fly and thereby save time and money by reducing the need to redye batches of finished goods.
