Description:The use of fiber optic sensors for online monitoring of chemical species in hazardous waste monitoring was discussed. Advantages of fiber optic sensors for hazardous waste monitoring included size, near real time response, and low manning and expertise requirements. Porous glass and polymer optical fibers may be particularly useful in these applications as their large interactive surface area improves sensitivity markedly. A continuous optical path can also be provided by these sensors, thereby minimizing mechanical and optical coupling losses. Sensor interfaces can also be developed that allow multisensor operation. A variety of environmental monitoring situations can be handled with these sensors. Additional applications included developmental bioreactors, control of process streams, and industrial hygiene applications. A family of novel fiber optic sensors was being developed which will provide online monitoring of chemical species in gases and liquids. Porous polymer or glass optical fibers were used in which selective chemical reagents were immobilized. The reaction of these reagents with the chemical of interest produces a change in the optical properties of the sensor.
