Description:The use of gas chromatography combined with a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor for vapor detection at low levels was described. Vapor plugs eluted from the gas chromatography column were individually injected onto a SAW sensor. A SAW sensor was first tested as an individual sensor with each vapor of interest at one or more concentrations. The sensor was then incorporated into the chemical vapor monitor (CVM), and system testing was performed. Selective coatings of ethyl-cellulose and fluoropolyol on SAW sensors were prepared using proprietary thin film coating techniques. The results indicated that SAW technology can be used to detect dimethyl- methylphosphonate (756796) and chloroethyl-ethylsulfide (693072) at concentrations below 1mg/m3 in less than 2 minutes. Methyl-benzoate (93583) and phenyl-acetone (103797) could also be detected at concentrations below 1mg/m3. Extrapolated detection limits and response times were given for both the SAW sensor experiments and the CVM experiments.
