Description:A program to prevent asbestos (1332214) induced health hazards in Finland was described. The program involved the dissemination of information, training, services, and research. The aims of the program were to prevent asbestos related health hazards by minimizing exposure and educating workers, to assess the risks associated with asbestos exposure, and to improve the diagnosis of asbestos related diseases. Specific topics that were addressed included exposure to asbestos in Finland, prevalence of asbestosis, the association between asbestos exposure and cancer, time factors in asbestos induced cancer, cancer chemoprevention among asbestos exposed workers, and diagnostics and compensation. The authors conclude that primary prevention is the main goal of the asbestos program. The termination of exposure, antismoking campaigns, improved diagnostics, and careful attention to compensation issues, as well as clarification of the potential for chemoprevention, are the focus of the asbestos program.
