Description:A unique automated motion and breathing system that utilizes NIOSH adopted dummy heads was developed to evaluate the integrity of dust respirator masks and the effects of dynamic factors that could affect respirator mask face seals under simulated working conditions. The experimental respirator testing system consisted of a human form dummy equipped with an automated motion and breathing system. The various components of the system, including the chamber, the dummy, the motor drive indexers, the three stepping motors, the indexer programmer, the breather, and the portacount were described. The system could be used to evaluate a variety of factors such as the influence of head and body motion, breathing rate and frequency, strap tension, temperature, and humidity on respirator seal. An example of the programming and operation of the robotic motion breathing system was presented whereby the dummy carried out a consecutive combination of head and body motions at a fixed breathing rate.
