Description:A certification procedure to assess the performance of respiratory protection equipment in developing countries was described. Aspects of respirator performance that were discussed included particulate penetration, breathing resistance, and respirator fit. The ability of respirators to exclude harmful dust from the breathing air of the worker in a contaminated environment was noted as the most important aspect of respirator performance. Commercial equipment available to test particulate respirators in a manner applicable to respirator certification was mentioned. Determination of acceptable breathing resistance was also important. State of the art filtration testing equipment has been indicated to automatically measure breathing resistance while determining filter efficiency. It was recommended that the overseeing agency purchase products from the open market and test for compliance as a means to assure implementation of protective measures. The authors conclude that there are few standards or regulations governing the performance or use of respirators in developing countries. With the advancement of technology and existence of practical respirator use standards as models, regulations and standards should be adopted to assure adequate protection against pneumoconioses producing dusts and mists.
