    Achievements in dust control and dust proofing measures adopted since the founding of The People's Republic of China were reported. The principle of three stage prevention was applied and consisted of elimination of dust harm control of dust sources, and provision of regular checkups to ensure the early diagnosis, control and treatment of diseases. Various steps were taken to control dust in all industries in accordance with their own industrial features and experience. Effective measures taken in coal mining, for instance, included: wet drilling; coal seam infusion; use of water stemming; spraying; mechanical ventilation dust suppression by water mist and purification of airflow; replacement of dry mix shotcreting with wet mix shotcreting; and cleaning of fallen dust in tunnels and on sidewalls, supports, and roads. The roles of trade unions in dust control were addressed and included: participation in the studies and formulation of laws and decrees; participation in the design, construction, and operation of antidust installations; organization and mobilization of workers and trade union members to carry out activities of technical cooperation; supervision of situations involving dust hazards problems; and provision of education and propaganda activities.
