Description:The differences existing between the Chinese and the International Labor Office (ILO) classification systems were noted to pose a potential source of disagreement in the diagnostic process. It was also noted that before an effective exchange of epidemiologic pneumoconiosis data can take place, a clear correlation between the two classification systems was needed. As a preliminary step in joint Sino-American pneumoconiosis research efforts, a study was conducted which correlated the ILO and Chinese systems by evaluating three B-readers' interpretations of 32 Chinese standard X-ray films. The 1986 Chinese Roentgenodiagnostic Criteria of the Pneumoconioses represented a marriage between the older 1963 Chinese classification and features of the 1980 ILO Classification. The Chinese stage system was maintained. Aspects of the ILO classification were included to enable researchers to make a clear correspondence between the two systems. The authors conclude that there was a good correlation between the type and profusion of small opacities between the Chinese and ILO classification.
