Description:As part of a larger study of the effects on workers of exposure to ethylene-glycol ethers, a visit was made to TRW Electronic Products Inc. (SIC-3679), Colorado Springs, Colorado. Work at the site included coating/marking, bonding, soldering, degreasing and surface mount assembly of printed circuit boards. During the survey the use of 2-ethoxyethyl-acetate (111159) was noted in the blending of the multiple components of a coating mixture and in the application of the coating mixture to printed circuit board parts. However, the only process operation which involved any potential exposure to ethylene-glycol ethers was the touch up marking of circuit boards. No detectable concentrations were noted during sampling due to the very limited use of the glycol ether containing materials, effective work practices, and adequate engineering controls. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning system used 10 percent make up air in the winter. High efficiency particulate filters were used to maintain a particle count of less than 200,000 microns in the work areas. There were lip suction draft hoods in the marking area with design face velocities of 100 linear feet per minute. Safety glasses and surgical gloves were worn when blending the catalyst and coating compounds. Half mask respirators were available with organic vapor cartridges for coating operations. Due to the fact that the exposures to 2-EEA were not detectable, and to the small number of potentially exposed workers at this site, the authors recommend that this company not be included in further indepth studies.
