Preliminary survey report: control technology support for sensor at the Morie Company, Mauricetown Plant, Mauricetown, New Jersey.

  A study was made to document and evaluate effective techniques for the control of potential health hazards at the Morie Company, Mauricetown, New Jersey. This facility produced glass, foundry and multipurpose sands. Sand left the site in trucks in bulk or in bags. About 85 individuals were employed at the site, operating on three shifts. Sand was dredged from ponds and pumped to a holding tank where it was washed, classified according to size by a flume, and transferred into storage piles. Sand was removed from storage by front end loader to one of two drying sites. One drying site was a fuel oil fired rotary kiln equipped with a wet scrubber. The other drying site consisted of a series of three fluidized bed dryers discharging to one of two vibrating screens. Sand was bagged on a four spout St. Regis packer, the bags palletized, and the pallet shrink wrapped. Local exhaust for the belt conveyor transfer points and the two vibrating screens was provided by the same bag house that exhausts the dryers. A ventilated loading spout was used for bulk loading. Operations up to and including the processing site were inherently safe as they were performed wet. Control methods in place at the dry processes included primarily local exhaust ventilation, isolation of operators in control rooms, and housekeeping. While no local exhaust was provided in the bagging area, the bagging operator worked in a filtered air shower. Some improvements in materials handling, local exhaust and fresh air supply were needed in other sections of the facility.
