  The preventability of cardiac disease was discussed as an introduction to the symposium section on the role of industry in preventive cardiology. Topics included characteristics associated with the future development of coronary heart disease as identified by epidemiologic studies, the interrelationships between high risk factors for heart disease as defined by the Framingham study, development of the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial and the identification of the high risk individual using simple measures, and the downward trend in coronary disease in the United States. The role of industry in reducing coronary disease was assessed from the perspectives of the overall health of the work force and cost effectiveness. Industrial intervention was illustrated using a program for controlling hypertension at the work site.
