Description:Stress associated with job relocation was assessed in workers of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in relation to the determination of criteria for the recognition and prevention of stress symptoms. Negative factors toward relocation were the threat of loss of promotion potential, the loss of management effectiveness, and the loss of a job for the employee and the loss of current physical comforts, close friends, and roots for the family. Potential rewards associated with relocation included increased challenge and responsibility and the value of a new learning situation for the employee and the attractiveness of a new location, expanded friends and cultural values for the family. Workers reported that corporate induced moves for management development were made less stressful through the sharing of career pathing between the employed individual and his or her family, relocation into an established neighborhood, volunteer adaptation or welcoming mechanisms in local schools and neighborhoods, involvement in athletics and extracurricular activities for children, interest in community organizations, and transfer as soon as possible after the decision to relocate was made. Specific programs developed by Northwestern Bell to help employees deal with the emotional stresses and anxieties of relocation included a personal counseling service, family synergy workshops, a male/female awareness workshop, and a management couples program.
