Description:An on site visit was made to the Formaldehyde Production Facility, E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company, Linden, New Jersey to observing work practices, conduct quantitative personal sampling, and evaluate control methods to lessen employee exposure to hazardous materials. Formaldehyde (50000) production took place in a unit on site which was removed more than 50 feet from other operating units. The workforce covered two production areas, formaldehyde and sulfuric- acid. The facility had an environmental coordinator whose job it was to oversee safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental concerns. Monitoring was carried out at the recommendation of the coordinator. Contingency plans were well defined. Safety precautions continued to be integrated into the operating procedures. Formal lockout procedures were used for any operation involving breaking a line or using fire. Safety equipment includes showers, eyewashes, protective clothing, self contained breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers, blankets, and first aid kits. While the facility appeared to be in good condition with regard to effective hazard control, several such sites would have to be visited before selection for inclusion in an in depth study could be made. However, such a study at this location would provide information concerning potential exposures in loading product in rail and truck tank cars, methanol unloading, and process sampling and analysis.
