Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Monsanto Plastics and Resins Company, Addyston, Ohio, for the purpose of determining the best means of controlling occupational exposures to formaldehyde (50000), certain organic solvents, and other harmful agents associated with adhesives. Employees involved in phenol/formaldehyde (PF) resin production worked in four shifts to cover a 24 hours/day, 7 days/week schedule. The products of the PF resin line included liquid resins, laminating varnishes, and solid or lump resins processed into powdered resin compounds. The reactors were sealed during most of the work shift and operated below atmospheric pressure. A local exhaust collar hood could be placed around the opening when a reactor was opened to be charged or cleaned. The vacuum system could also be operated when the hatch was open to reduce vapor escape from the reactor. No continuous ambient air monitoring was carried out. Respirators were worn only during certain situations such as entering a reactor. A safety line attached to a manual winch must be worn by a worker entering a reactor and others must be present at the access hole to monitor the activities of the worker inside. The author indicated that the safety steps taken by Monsanto at this facility were excellent. This site was not recommended for a visit as part of the in depth study as the focus of the study is on users, not manufacturers, of adhesive products.
