Preliminary control technology assessment of Stark Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio.

• Description:
  Health hazard control measures used in the ceramics industry (SIC- 3251) were surveyed. Work processes and existing control technologies were evaluated at Stark Ceramics Incorporated, Canton, Ohio in September, 1982. The company employed 166 workers to produce glazed structural clay tile from locally mined ball clays and shale. Raw materials were coarsely crushed, then fed automatically into a dry pan for fine crushing. The fine ground material was passed through heated vibrating screens, then conveyed to a mill where it was blended with water and extruded in a column, cut to size, and conveyed through an automatic glaze spray. The glazed tile was placed in a tunnel drier where 80 to 85 percent of the moisture was removed in 24 hours. The tiles were then fired for 3 to 4 days at 1800 degrees-F, inspected, sized, finished, and sorted and packed for transport to the customer. Periodic inspections and safety meetings were held, and workers were provided with safety glasses, safety shoes, and hard hats. Local exhaust ventilation was provided at the glaze spraying and grinding operations. The author does not recommend an in depth study of this company since no unique state of the art health controls are used.
