Description:A site visit was made to the GTE Products Corporation, Fluorescent Lamp Division, located in Danvers, Massachusetts for the purpose of evaluating various control methods in place at this facility to reduce worker exposure to mercury (7439976). This company produced a variety of fluorescent lamps including germicidal, diazo, Gro-Lux plant growth lamps, appliance, and reprographic and general lighting lamps. About 175 of the 700 workers at the site had potential exposure to mercury on the job. Mercury control techniques discussed included a dilution ventilation program in which air movement was achieved in the production areas using an extensive network of air supply and exhaust systems. Also described were local air supply, physical containment of mercury including tube catchers and mercury spill vacuum pumps, isolation of various processes and handling of mercury. Personal protective equipment, work practices, and monitoring and training programs were discussed. The existing control methods appeared adequate to limit worker exposure to mercury. Two controls which probably contributed the most were dilution ventilation and isolation of the mercury work areas. As there were numerous mercury vapor emission points and several heat sources associated with processes at this site, the dilution ventilation system was likely a better means of control than local exhaust ventilation.
