Description:An on site visit was made to the Ray-O-Vac Company located in Fennimore, Wisconsin for the purpose of evaluating control equipment designed to prevent the exposure of workers to mercury (7439976) at the facility. The products manufactured at this site were C, D, and AA size alkaline round cells used for small electronics applications where longer battery life was desired. Work areas involving the use of mercury or mercury containing materials were the gel room, scrap room, and the center of the production assembly lines where the gel was introduced into the battery can. Engineering controls for general ventilation, gel room ventilation, the gel blender, gel handling controls were described. Personal protective equipment, work practices, biological monitoring, air contaminant monitoring, and medical programs were also discussed. Recent changes at the site have brought worker exposure levels to new lows. These changes included a job rotation program for employees of the gel room. Under this plan employees worked 2 months in this room and 1 month elsewhere at the facility. Other changes included the addition of a closed gel blender which began operation in 1977, and an increase in the ventilation capacity of the gel room. It is not recommended that an in depth study be performed at this site as sufficient information on these control methods for safety with mercury was obtained during the preliminary visit.
