Description:Bagging operations at the Cyprus Industrial Minerals Company (SIC- 1496), Three Forks, Montana were evaluated to determine how effective the talc (14807966) control measures in place at this facility were in eliminating hazards to the workers. The facility produced 50,000 to 100,000 tons of industrial grade talc a year, operating 24 hours/day for 7 days/week. Bagging was normally scheduled 24 hours a day for 5 days per week. All dust producing equipment was connected to exhaust ventilation, with 36 dust collector bag houses each with a micropulse cleaning system. There was exhaust ventilation around each spout at the packers. On three sides of the semibulk bagging area there was a transparent plastic curtain. Administrative controls included rotating the bagging crew among the various work stations every 2 hours. All new employees were trained. No respiratory protective equipment was required for production workers. The study indicated that at the operation where 50 pound valve type bags were loaded, the control techniques were not adequate. Leakage from the bag valves during filling was the most obvious source of dust. At the time of the site visit, the semibulk packing equipment was not in operation. The author concludes that the semibulk loading operation would be appropriate for a detailed study.
