In-depth survey report of Hatteras Yachts, Highpoint, North Carolina.

  An in depth survey was conducted at Hatteras Yachts (SIC-3732), Highpoint, North Carolina. The production of boats at this facility involved the use of a polyester resin containing 40 to 60 percent styrene (100425) monomer. During the process a gel coat consisting of a pigmented styrene resin was applied as a spray coat to the mold prior to the lamination step. The hull of the boat was fabricated from glass fibers. Personal and area air samples were collected on site. Measurements were also taken of acetone (67641) exposures. The highest exposure to styrene was determined to be 97 parts per million (ppm), and was for a worker laminating in the bow with the push fans turned off. The average level of styrene during lamination on the starboard side was 27ppm while similar results for the port side were 43ppm. This data indicated good control methods were in place at this location as even the peak levels were below the current permissible exposure limit of 100ppm as a time weighted average for styrene. The author recommends that changes be made in the placement and use of fans as part of the push/pull ventilation system to reduce contamination of the general work area. When the bow area is being laminated, the push fans in the bow should be slowed rather than shut off.
