  The safety and health program applied successfully at the three facilities of the Lynchburg Foundry, located in Virginia and employing approximately 4,500 people, was outlined. The entire program, which involved top management support, employee training and incentives, high visibility, strict enforcement of rules, self inspection, health monitoring, and good housekeeping, resulted in lower compensation costs, reduction in fines, high operational efficiency, and satisfaction of the moral obligation toward employees. Determination from top management down to leadmen on the production line and the willingness to spend the money for the guarding, control systems, monitoring, and surveillance programs were found to be the two main factors responsible for the success of the program. The health surveillance program included audiograms, chest x-rays, hypertension screening, and eye examinations. Upon the detection of safety and health problems by the prevailing monitoring system, interim measures were applied and the engineering department was notified so that the situation could be remedied. Consultants were brought in when special expertise was required, especially in the area of noise control. Common incentive programs included gift awards, steak dinners, performance appraisals for determining future pay rates, recognition of good safety records, and learning by mistakes.
